Ramos: Listening to critics a waste of time

Image
The Real Madrid defender says he is focusing on his own game and has warned his team-mates that they have no margin for error after Christmas Real Madrid  defender  Sergio Ramos  says that listening to critics of his style of play would be a waste of time. The 27-year-old's disciplinary record has been in the spotlight of late, having picked up the 18th red card of his career in the 2-2 draw with Osasuna. However, he insists that he never paid heed to those who criticise his style of play, insisting that he is focusing on giving his all for Carlo Ancelotti's side. "Here we all win and lose together. We need to maintain that mentality," he is quoted as saying by  AS . "If I start caring about what people say about me [I'll be wasting my time]. It all goes in one ear and out the other. I always give everything and I'm going to stay at Real Madrid for many more years." Following Sunday's 3-2 win over Valencia at Mestalla,  los Blancos  are five...

Cristiano Ronaldo: Three memorable moments

Image
A total of 68 goals in 57 games - by 11 December - is a phenomenal feat, but the numbers are not the only reason why 2013 has been a landmark year in  Cristiano Ronaldo ’s spectacular career. Amongst many performances, the memorable night in Sweden when the forward became Portugal’s joint top goalscorer and confirmed his team’s place at the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™ will also live long in the memory. After such an incredible year, it is hardly surprising that the Real Madrid player is one of the three finalists for the FIFA Ballon d’Or award. Real Madrid’s top scorer in the 2012/2013 UEFA Champions League, he was the decisive factor in said World Cup qualifying play-off between Portugal and Sweden. With just over a month to go until the award winner is announced at the FIFA Ballon d’Or Gala 2013 in Zurich on 13 January,  FIFA.com  looks back at three of  Cristiano Ronaldo ’s greatest moments this year. Santiago Bernabéu celebrates 66 years as Madrid’s home

Image
Estadio Santiago Bernabéu Since its inauguration on 14 December 1947, the stadium has been the scene of some of the most important moments in the club’s history. To celebrate its opening, Real Madrid organized a friendly against Os Belenenses which ended with a 3-1 win to Madrid. The Santiago Bernabéu has not stopped growing since its construction and in the next few years it will be remodelled, enabling it to keep its place amongst the foremost sporting venues in the world.

THIS COULD YET BE THE WORLD CUP OF THE AMERICAS

Image
First, a word of reassurance for Roy Hodgson. The Amazon, where he has never been, is not as bad as he – having, just to be clear, never been there – seems to think. It was a given from the moment Hodgson voiced some mild concerns about Amazonian humidity, thereby incurring the delightfully outspoken wrath of the mayor of Manaus, that England would be drawn to play at least one of their matches in Brazil's interior at next year's World Cup. And so they will, having drawn Italy first up in the vast illuminated crocodile-skin lozenge that is the brand new 40,000 capacity Arena Amazonia. After the draw Hodgson appeared before the BBC television cameras looking gloomily resigned to making the best of England's 3,000-mile round trip into the heart of darkness. “I'm optimistic,” England's manager said, looking wan, pale, fretful and generally drained of all hope, and continuing to bring to mind, surprisingly given his own safari-suited air of cosmopolitanism, the kind...

Official: India to host U-17 World Cup in 2017

Image
India got the better of three other contenders to grab the rights of hosting the prestigious youth championship... FIFA officially announced today that India have been handed the hosting rights for the 2017 U-17 World Cup.  "India confirmed by the FIFA #ExCo as host of the FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017," the world governing body's official Twitter handle announced. India was among four countries that tabled an official bid for to host the tournament along with South Africa, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan. Republic of Ireland had showed an interest but never made a bid for the same, as told to  Goal  by a representative from the Irish FA. However, India edged past the rest, to win the right to host the first major tournament on the nation's soil. As per the bid, eight cities - New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore, Margao, Kochi, Pune and Guwahati - are in line to be the venues of the tournament. "We are extremely excited about the development and would thank our pr...

Image
The Madrid star refused to comment on the Uefa chief's latest remarks and has hinted he will not go to the award ceremony in January Cristiano Ronaldo  has suggested he may boycott the Ballon d'Or following Uefa president Michel Platini comments on Tuesday. The European football chief joked that the award's voting deadline was extended for the sake of the Real Madrid forward , but some Spanish outlets claimed that the Frenchman was being serious with his remarks. Ronaldo refused to respond to Platini's comments, while suggesting he may not go to the ceremony on January 13 in Zurich and instead stay in Madrid or go to Portugal. "I do not think that [Platini] was trying to provoke me," the 28-year-old told reporters in Madeira, where he is enjoying a few days' rest and preparing for  the opening of his own personal museum . "I will not respond to his comments. "On the day of the Ballon d'Or ceremony I may be in Spain or in...

We're a young side with drive and ambition, and obviously we're going to fight for all of the titles. That's wh at we want." As for the Ballon d'Or, Iker can only see it going to one person: "Right now, there is one player who is a cut above the rest and there is no doubt about it: it's Cristiano Ronaldo. He demonstrates his drive and ambition in every game."

RONALDO HURT BUT REAL, ATLETICO CRUISE TO EASY WINS

Image
Cristiano Ronaldo fired Real Madrid ahead before going off injured as they cruised to a 5-0 win at Almeria to remain six points adrift of leaders Barcelona who defeated Granada 4-0 earlier on Saturday. Atletico Madrid then played their part in a day of big wins for the teams at the top of the table when Raul Garcia and David Villa scored two goals apiece to help Atletico Madrid retain a strong hold on second spot with a 7-0 win over 10-man Getafe. Ronaldo struck after three minutes but the game was still in the balance when he limped off early in the second half. Karim Benzema settled Real's nerves by curling home the second on 61 minutes before Gareth Bale, Isco and Alvaro Morata consigned Almeria to a resounding defeat. The main concern was the extent of the leg strain for Ronaldo, who has bagged 14 goals in seven games including four for Portugal in their triumphant two-legged World Cup playoff win over Sweden. "I don't think it is important," Real co...

World Cup 2014 Dream Team

As all the teams have been officially booked thier places for World Cup 2014, we shall have a look at the best XI out of the bunch of talented players going to feature for their country. It is very difficult to choose only 11 from the list which includes talents like Ronaldo, Suarez, Van Persie, Messi, Rooney to name a few. Many big talents will be missing in this team. I decided to choose the modern 4-2-3-1 formation for our team. Lets get started... GK - Manuel Neuer - Germany After a stunning last season with Bayern Munich, Neuer continue to show his form this season also. He has been outstanding and has cemented his place in Germany and Bayern squad and lately in our team. With Casillas not finding regular first team chance for Real Madrid and ageing Buffon, Neuer is the best keeper to be in Brazil. Honourable Mentions : Thiabut Courtois (Belgium), Hugo Lloris (France), Gianluigi Buffon (Italy), Iker Casillas (Spain) RB - Philip Lahm -...

EXCITING SECOND LEG AWAITS SWEDEN, PORTUGAL

Image
Portugal are 1-0 up after the first leg of the World Cup playoff against Sweden but with the return match being held at a stadium dubbed the 'Zlatan Arena' the job is by no means done. Sweden captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic was relatively subdued in the first leg in Lisbon on Friday as a late diving header from Cristiano Ronaldo put Portugal in the driving seat. Ibrahimovic, though, has a penchant for the spectacular at Sweden's home ground and at the age of 32 he will be desperate to take his country through to next year's finals in Brazil. The Paris St Germain forward has scored 10 goals in eight matches since Sweden took up residence at the Friends Arena, including a four-goal haul against England in the opening game there. Three of those goals have come in World Cup qualifiers with two against the Faroe Islands and the other one the winner in their final group game against Austria. Coach Erik Hamren said he wanted an improved performance from his team on Tuesday. "T...

Pepe: Cristiano Ronaldo treated unfairly in the Ballon d'Or

Image
The Seleccao centre-back says that it is "not normal" that his compatriot has only lifted the trophy on one occasion, in light of the forward's remarkable statistics Pepe  feels his  Portugal  and  Real Madrid  team-mate  Cristiano Ronaldo  has been treated unfairly in relation to the Fifa  Ballon d'Or . The 28-year-old attacker was awarded the trophy in 2008, while he also made the podium in 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2012. However, Pepe believes his compatriot has not been given enough recognition and suggested that Fifa president Sepp Blatter's recent revelation that he favours Lionel Messi over Ronaldo was telling in that regard. "We know that, even just for the figures Cristiano has racked up, it’s not normal that he’s only won the Ballon d’Or  once after being to the gala seven or eight times," the defender told  AS .  "It just shows that a lot of strange things happen in football. It’s not fair what has happened to Cristiano. "I ho...

Blatter apologises to Ronaldo & Madrid

Image
While comparing the Portugal international to Lionel Messi, the Swiss said "one spends more time at the hairdresser's than the other" Fifa president Sepp Blatter has issued a public apology to  Cristiano Ronaldo  for disparaging remarks he made about the  Real Madrid  star. During a debate at Oxford University over the respective merits of the Portugal international and Barcelona ace Lionel Messi, Blatter joked that "one spends more time at the hairdresser's than the other". Ronaldo took great offence, insinuating that the jibe merely underlined Fifa's bias against him and his club, but Blatter has now moved to calm the controversy by tweeting the 28-year-old attacker. "I apologise if you were upset by my light-hearted answer at private event on Friday," the Swiss wrote to Ronaldo's official Twitter account. "I never meant to offend you. "I am an honorary 'socio' at Real Madrid and explained we've many talented players...

Mysterious figures at Juventus

The latest in a series of unexplained events involved a gang of strange men causing confusion at Juventus Stadium in Turin EXTRA TIME Eleven mysterious figures were spotted at Juventus Stadium in the latest of a bizarre sequence of unexplained football-related incidents across the world. Dressed in black robes with intriguing symbols on their chests, the conspicuous figures sat behind the goal at the north end of the stadium in Turin during Juventus' 2-0 victory over Genoa on Sunday. The gang made signals in unison during the match and they were also seen standing up in unison on several random occasions before returning to their seats. The latest sighting comes after 11 other figures, also in the mysterious black robes, were seen making similar movements in the crowd at Bayern Munich's 3-2 win over Hertha Berlin at the Allianz Arena on Saturday and at Chelsea's win over Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. The insignia on the chests of the cloaks matches the symbo...

Ancelotti’s tactical mistakes come to the fore in clasico defeat

Rahul Bali highlights the Italian's faux pax in the most important game which left his side with decent possession but no penetration... In the aftermath of the 2-1 defeat Real Madrid suffered at the hands of Barcelona, it was the referee Alberto Undiano who grabbed all the headlines. While Madristas claimed that they deserved to have two penalty decisions awarded in their favour which could have turned the fervor of the game, the Catalonians stated that Sergio Ramos should have been sent-off and that Cesc Fabregas wanted a spot-kick after Pepe “took his legs off.” This certainly has become a trend of some sort in the post-clasico interviews where controversies hog the limelight. However amongst this entire hubbub, what cannot be ignored is Carlo Ancelotti’s tactics. The Italian had three central defenders in his line-up with Sergio Ramos being picked as a defensive midfielder, a position he hadn’t played in since the 2005-06 season. Ancelotti chose to be defensive in his set-up wi...
